What Advice Did I Give my Broke and Unemployed Former College Roommate?
The same information I give everyone
I had a college roommate call me recently. He was down in the dumps financially and emotionally. He started making good money out of college four years ago living in California before coming to work over on the East coast. Now, he’s been unemployed for six months after getting let go from his job and he’s been living off the severance, stimulus checks, and staying with his parents. He’s been doing a little consulting here and there but otherwise, he’s running out of cash fast since he didn’t have any emergency savings.
He needed advice from someone who has been picked up, chewed up, and spit out more times than he could count, so he called me.
Not to get into too much detail, but here is what I basically told him:
You’re young and physically capable of working; go get a part-time job at least to start so you’ll at least be making some money. It doesn’t matter whether you’re “too good” to deliver pizzas or not, bill collectors don’t care where you went to school.
Open up an online savings account with a high interest rate and no-starting minimum deposit and create a starter emergency fund of $1,000. They call it a “rainy day fund” not for if it will ever rain but when it will rain.
Go on every job board and apply to a minimum of 10 different jobs per day. Each time you go to take a crap you should be able to pick up your phone while you’re on the white throne and complete this.
Start developing other skills so you can start up a side hustle. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel; find something that is a challenge or inconvenience for people that you can find a way to make easier or faster for them. Whether it’s proofreading reports and essays or reviewing websites, there are enough things out there you can do from your couch that are in high demand.
Remind yourself this- you will find a job, and it will be hopefully better than your last job. Don’t go around convincing yourself you’ll never be hired. Unemployment is a waiting game when you’re doing it right. If you aren’t even trying, the answer is pretty clear.
After talking to him, I sent him some stuff I’ve published in the past that I thought would help.

l’m not a financial adviser or certified professional. I only do what I feel is right for me, and as someone that has had a unique career path, passive income through investing has allowed me to build wealth and earn reliable cash flow. While administrations come and go, and policies change by the day, ultimately the biggest impact on my financial health and future are the decisions I make regarding my money.
If the recent defense of corrupt hedge funds, Wall Street bankers, and immoral regulators have shown us anything, it’s that the only people with our best interest at heart when it comes to our money are ourselves.
