I Traveled to the Land of Fire and Ice
The death of the traveler and birth of the hero.
The eleventh step of the Hero’s Journey (yes, we’re going completely out of order) is often called “the Resurrection.”
The site The Ho Tai Way used an example from the film Mulan to explain it:
The Resurrection. This can be the most dangerous life-and-death ordeal for the hero and is the climax of the story. A final test that represents a cleansing. It might be a showdown between the hero and the Shadow. During the ordeal phase, you looked at shadowy places in your past. During the resurrection, one final challenge awaits. Mulan warns the rest of the army that Shan Yu is hiding to attack. No one believes her, and she must convince them of the danger. In your resurrection, you might face the deep, dark secret that you forgot about.
2018 was a year of big failures and big achievements. My first book became a bestseller but my life as a whole was far from enviable. Despite all of that, throughout the year I was traveling through a phase of that chapter in my life which was coming to an end.
My father was returning from a year-long deployment, and his big plan for when he came back was to take my younger brother and I on a trip to Iceland.
It sounded fun, but I told myself that only winners go on vacation, people with something to celebrate. I felt like I all did that year was get lucky a few times and manage not to screw a bunch of other things up. I was so focused on getting through the days, I didn’t even realize the journey I had been on that year was making deep changes to how I saw myself and the world around me.
Going to Iceland wasn’t just a trip, it showed me something bigger about myself and my place in the world.

I was a very different person when I came back home. While a part of me died through an intentional confrontation of my own fears and insecurities, another part of me was born because the journey I had been on was turning me into the person I needed to be- my own hero.
