I went to a military junior college right after high school.
It was the most challenging two years of my life.
What kept me sane were the weekly phone calls with my father. He was an active-duty Army officer who graduated from the Citadel and Army OCS. He completed airborne school in his twenties and deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
My father was always tough, growing up in abject poverty as a child just made me a tougher adult.
It’s hard to pin down one specific conversation that really stuck with me. One Christmas I came home and we decided to watch “Rocky Balboa.” Great movie.
There’s a scene where Rocky is in a heated discussion with his son. Watching it gave me goosebumps since it was so similar to so many discussions my father and I had.
Give it a watch if you haven’t seen it before.
Life never stopped being a challenge after graduation. It just became different types of difficult.
What I learned was that there are things in my life I can control, money and my own emotions being part of that.
Job losses, pay cuts, bad bosses, none of those things have to keep you down.
It’s about how you get up.
