I paid for the PPV, I watched all eight rounds and let me tell you it was worth the price of admission.
Here are my takeaways:
My initial prediction was that Paul KOs Fury in the fourth round. My backup guess was that this would go all eight rounds and the decision would go to Paul. Obviously, this didn’t happen but many of the “experts” predicted that Jake wouldn’t go the distance against Fury. I think ultimately Jake’s survival, his jab which knocked Fury down in the second half, and the fact that the points were so close shows that Jake Paul is 100% a professional boxer. Tommy Fury didn’t knock down or knock out Paul, he scrapped for a total 24 minutes. The unanimous decision was close but this was to show that Fury was not significantly more talented or skilled than Paul. This was Tommy’s fight to lose, not Jake’s to win. Fury carries this win but Paul proved his moxy.
The referee from this fight dictated too much, did not evenly remove points from both boxers’ wrongful actions and was not good for this fight. A different ref would have led to a Jake Paul victory if they were fair.
“Influencer boxing” isn’t dead. Jake (and his younger brother Logan) has single handily revitalized the world of boxing. What he did was entirely focus on becoming a boxer, which he has achieved. Other social media stars, retired athletes, and celebrities can jump in the ring but none will ever have the commitment and dedication Paul has shown.
Jake Paul is the #1 marketer and self-promoter in the sports world. He surpasses Floyd Mayweather and just about anyone in the MMA world which he’ll be jumping into with the PFL.
I still think the Nate Diaz two-fight contract will follow through (one fight boxing, one MMA) because there is some serious money to be made. The KSI fight will still happen too and Paul will use this as a “comeback” fight because KSI isn’t the boxer Paul is, even Fury at the post-fight press conference said that.
